HERTA: ONE AFTERNOON, AN army truck drove into Bergen-Belsen. It was not like any truck we’d seen before. The soldiers wore uniforms different from the Nazis’, and one of the prisoners told us these soldiers were from England. The war was over.

As soon as they arrived, the German guards changed out of their uniforms, put on prisoners’ clothes to hide their identities, and ran away into the surrounding forest. When the prisoners saw that the Nazis were running away and that British soldiers had taken over the camp, they started throwing rocks at the fleeing Germans. I was confused by this. I didn’t want to get into trouble and asked my sister, “What’s going on? Why are prisoners throwing rocks?”

Renee was weak from typhus, but she looked at me with a big smile and signed, “We’re free!”

“Free?” I asked her. I was in shock. “I mean, that’s impossible, we can’t be free …”

Even though for so long I’d tried to be the brave one, actually I’d always been afraid that we would be killed. But now—we were free!
